BRENTLY'S TOUGHEST CHALLENGEST YET

Brent is now out of surgery as of about 3:30 a.m..Here are some of the challenges Brent faced on the evening of March 31, 2009:

  • internal bleeding began around 7:05 a.m
  • Brent went for a CT scan and after this it was decided that Brent needed to go for surgery
  • The amazing medical staff at Regina General wanted to do everything possible to avoid surgery - the main reason being that there was just too much risk involved
  • Brent's blood pressure began to jump
  • It was discovered that Brent's aorta was in danger
  • Brent is in critical condition - one of the biggest consequences from tonight's surgery is that Brent is basically back to square one of his healing process
  • the process of his abdomen healing is starting all over
  • there will be no visitors accepted for a long time (how long we don't know)

The results:

  • Brent is heavily medicated and sedated
  • The Doctor is hopeful yet at the same time expressed concern at the challenges he faces right now
  • This is the fourth surgery on the aorta - they used one large vein this time from his leg to do the graft
  • There was concern that his kidneys would shut down tonight due to the time allowance for the surgery - the kidneys are fine
  • The total surgery time was five and a half hours and the doctor expressed that they used every moment to do what they needed
  • The healing process begins again

The risk of the surgery tonight was a big one. The weight upon the shoulders of Scot and Carolyn (Cary) is undescribable. Sitting here with them tonight I observed the commitment and love these parents have for their son, Brent. Little Man is very much loved by these two excellent parents. The parents attentively watched their son being wheeled back into the MPICU. One wonders the longing they are feeling to just go, wrapped their arms around Brent and give him a great big hug.

In the midst of pain and suffering there are beautiful moments. Tonight, Pastor Angela and myself were priveleged to witness some of these moments - a parent's love demonstrated for a child, listening to cool stories of Brent and watching this married couple find some moments to quietly hope and laugh together.

Here's the bottom line....Scot and Carolyn (Cary) believe in the Heavenly Father. His light is strengthening them for this journey. There are some tough challenges ahead for Brent but like the Doctor said tonight - "Let's be hopeful...let's be praying"

Tonight, another beautiful moment - after the Doctor and the nurse left there was a quiet moment and a sense of relief. After listening intently they know that for the next few days that this is Brent's way of saying I am going to take my time to rest and heal. Go celebrate Katie. Celebrate the life and good choices she made. The next few days are for remembering Brent's sister, Katie.

Keep hoping. Keep loving. Keep praying.

Scot and Carolyn (Cary) thank you so much for your love and prayers.

  3. Thank the Lord Brent pulled through the surgery again, and we all pray for continued healing and strength for you all.
While Brent is daily on our hearts, so is the memory of Katie and the tremendous loss you feel for her passing. Her obituary was lovely. May you find peace in honoring her life, especially this week.

  4. We are constantly keeping Brent in our prayers...so sorry to hear about the setback, but its obvious Brent is a fighter and we trust he will come through this battle once again. So many people are praying for a miracle, and we know God is capable of granting us that miracle, so we will 'wait'. Thinking of you Scot and Cary...one cannot imagine the emotions you must be going through. Praying for strength for each day, each moment. Will be thinking of you and praying for you all on Friday as you celebrate your daughter and sister's life...

    With love,
Cindy and Ron Mathies, and Brittany

We are praying for him in England and please let Scott know that his friends in Romania are also praying for Brent and the family. I have been with them this week and they have expressed their hearts to see Jesus work in this situation.
We are believing with you and are grateful that we are able to know how Brent is doing and how we can pray for him, Scott & Cary. Many Blessings and faith from friends in Europe.

  8. I just wanted to say thank you for the constant updates on this wonderful family, The Petersons. I do not personally know the whole family but have met Scot one or two times at soccer functions. I feel soooooooooooo connected to this family just by reading these posts. I pray continually for Brent, and for Scot and Cary as they must be in tremendous amounts of pain and suffering. I am so very glad that they have many close friends and family for support as this is so very difficult. Please know that there are alot of people that don't post on her but we read each and every update, we pray and hope that things settle down for Brent and the family. We may be silent but we are behind you and your family all the way. May you find the strength and peace you need to get through this. :) We all love you!
